Uncovering the potential within...
Lynda Mullaly Hunt has crafted a beautiful story about being “that kid”, the one for whom the expectations are low, and who retreats into her own world to keep the real one at a distance. Ally sees in pictures. Words are nearly impossible to decipher; so she doesn’t try. With the help of a great teacher, who begins to crack her code, Ally starts opening up to the idea that maybe there’s more to herself than she realized. It’s a powerful realization, and one that so many kids will relate to.

Through the course of the story, Ally finds and connects with other kids who accept her and see beyond the attempts at distancing herself from the. Ally’s allies, Albert and Keisha, feel very real to me. Their bond of friendship helps Ally realize that she has much to offer, and it bolsters the trio against the sideways glances and smack talk of some of the other kids, like Shay.

The author has effectively put into words that...

Inspiring, Uncompromising Cookbook
The philosophy behind this book is immediately apparent: the first 150 pages contain recipes for ingredients, not dishes. But what ingredients! Goat cheese, pork fat chile oil, rice vinegar, Brussels kraut, fig leaf syrup, mushroom broth, karasumi/bottarga(!) An entire other category is powders - onion, garlic, yoghurt, rice koji, kale, parsnip, sauerkraut - that are bright and fresh and perfect for inventive sous vide recipes. One warning though: the recipe for black garlic (put garlic heads in a slow cooker set on Warm, for two weeks) mentions the intense smell: I confirm that it can go through walls.

But back to that mushroom broth: it is ordinarily made with water and a few mushrooms, and is invariably insipid; this recipe cooks LOTS of fresh mushrooms at low temperature for hours then extracts all the liquid from them, is all. The recipe made so much sense that it was the first thing I made. It's easily the best mushroom broth in the world, but these guys also include...

A Strong Guide for Individuals and Small Businesses
In all practicality, it is difficult to find a book that properly addresses a solid social media strategy. Many try to be either all-encompassing or too narrow for everyday use. This book is laid out along 12 chapters and follows a very logical order. Beginning with what your social media footprint should look like to the intricacies of differences between the platforms. Guy offers a plethora of information, in a neatly organized fashion. There is no shortage of advice though, throughout these chapters, there are a whopping 123 different tips for improving your social media presence

Although mainly a technical book, the author does have his fun, and makes the whole book more readable by spats of comedy… Guy seems to have enough experience with trolls that he tends to refer to them as orifices…

Let’s take a look at some of the great and not so great aspects of this book.

Pros:
- Netiquette is observed in many chapters, and is...

"Love is not the same as forgiveness."
I've always thought it must be tough to be the accomplished but always less-well known sibling of a famous brother or sister. In "Vanessa and Her Sister," we are treated to Vanesa Bell's, the wife of Clive and sister of Virginia (Stephen) Woolf, account of being a member of a well-educated and accomplished family and circle of would-be famous intellectuals. The circle, known as the Bloomsbury group, includes journalist Lytton Strachey, novelist E.M. Forster, economist John Maynard Keynes, Leonard Woolf (then a cadet in the Colonial Civil Service, artist Margery "Snow" Snowden, and the two Stephen brothers: Thoby and Adrian, both Cambridge undergraduates. When the book opens, the four siblings are living together and hosting meetings of the circle. As the book progresses, we get to learn more about each one's work and personal lives, and how their paths intersect.

There are three main threads, among all the diary entries and correspondence by the various...

No Easy Answers
The first edition of Irrational Exuberance warned of a stock market bubble. The key takeaway was to diversify. A few months later the dot com bubble crashed and stocks corrected.

The second edition of Irrational Exuberance warned of a housing market bubble. The key takeaway was to diversify. A few years later, the sub-prime crisis hit and both stocks and house prices corrected.

This, the third edition, warns about a number of things. And there seems to be no place to hide. Interest rates on bonds are historically low and unattractive. US stock prices are high. Yet historically speaking, Shiller thinks stocks could continue to rise higher for a while longer. Housing prices have rebounded in the US and are at bubble levels in other countries. The key takeaway seems to be we should hedge risks, and invest in assets that correlate negatively with labor income. The only concrete hedging suggestions from Shiller sadly all come with significant complexity and a heavy...

Falls short of my expectations

The characters are all the same. If the chapters weren't headed with the names of the characters, you couldn't tell the difference between them. The voices, too, are a little precious. Given the awfulness of the characters...and they're all despicable...I would have liked a bit more attention to voice. Instead, this is a book that's all plot, and it moves along, but as I read, I found it impossible to suspend my disbelief. What are the chances of so many sociopaths coming together? And all so similar? No humor in this book, which might have improved it; it's a straightforward grind. I liked his first book, but this one's kind of a chore. And the comparisons to Patricia Highsmith simply seem inaccurate. But I'm clearly in the minority.

Move over Jackal, here comes Pilgrim?
This is definitely the best covert ops/terrorism/murder book I have read this year. Whether it gets into my top 10 best thrillers depends on how long it remains in my memory. There is a lot to remember in a complex 700 page book that left me with so many impressions - intelligent and clever, superbly and deeply plotted, brilliant characterisation, ambitious, enthralling, page-turning, action-packed and mostly unpredictable.

Pilgrim is the codename chosen by a man who doesn't want to exist. An adopted son of a wealthy family he has always been a loner and after college becomes part of an unknown covert US government group. After becoming the star operator in the group in an operation in Russia he goes into anonymous retirement and writes an obscure book under a pseudonym about the forensic background to the perfect crime. Can anyone commit the perfect crime using this information?

On the other side of the world in Saudi Arabia another youth grows up in a world...

Cover Unveiled for John Scalzi's Lock In

Fresh off his Hugo win for Redshirts and the commercial success of The Human Division, John Scalzi is coming back with what looks to be another standalone. And it is also his second near-future novel, if you could Agent to the Stars, which I do. Lock In explores a virus that is running rampant and for the most part it is manageable, but for some it turns them into virtually living statues. I'm definitely interested to see how Scalzi's trademark snark work into such a story.  Here's the teaser description:

Fifteen years from now, a new virus sweeps the globe. 95% of those afflicted experience nothing worse than fever and headaches. Four percent suffer acute meningitis, creating the largest medical crisis in history. And one percent find themselves “locked in”—fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus.

One per cent doesn't seem like a lot. But in the United States, that's 1.7 million people “locked in”...including the President's wife and daughter.

Spurred by grief and the sheer magnitude of the suffering, America undertakes a massive scientific initiative. Nothing can restore the ability to control their own bodies to the locked in. But then two new technologies emerge. One is a virtual-reality environment, “The Agora,” in which the locked-in can interact with other humans, both locked-in and not. The other is the discovery that a few rare individuals have brains that are receptive to being controlled by others, meaning that from time to time, those who are locked in can “ride” these people and use their bodies as if they were their own.

This skill is quickly regulated, licensed, bonded, and controlled. Nothing can go wrong. Certainly nobody would be tempted to misuse it, for murder, for political power, or worse....

I'm not sure if the cover is final, but currently it seems a little bland for a Scalzi cover though it moves him into the clean look that has become so popular for many best-selling authors. Lock In should be out in late August, but it should be noted Scalzi is still currently writing the manuscript.

Excellent selective guide to Germany's top destinations
Rick Steves guides are always excellent, but there is a major caveat. You have to appreciate Rick's approach to travel to really enjoy these guides. There are three characteristics that set these books apart from other travel guides.

First, they are NOT encyclopedic, but are selective surveys of the countries they cover. Rick does not attempt to cover the country in an exhaustive, comprehensive way. He selects sights, hotels, restaurants, and other attractions based on the things he believes most travelers will want to visit, and prioritizes them. For example, this guide recommends a trip to Nuremburg, but not to Bamberg. He recommends enormously popular Rothenburg, but not lesser-known but equally lovely Quedlinburg. All this adds up to make Rick's book a very much "on the beaten path" guide. His reason? If something is popular, there must be a reason. To really enjoy a guide like this, you have to trust that Rick's recommendations are made based on a thorough...

A brilliant collection of short stories by Pearlman! Worth reading is you can handle mature topics!
I received this book early from another website I belong to. I hope this review is helpful to you.

Pearlman's stories and incredibly descriptive, with an excellent use of symbolism, tone, and some surprisingly cynical surprises.

The short stories primarily take place in Massachusetts, with Rennie as the main character in most.

I must warn you there are some vivid accounts of some deeply troublesome topics, such as female circumcision. For me this was a bit shocking and far outside my comfort zone. However, it was handled in a tactful way and easy to digest once the initial shock wears off.

Overall, the stories are quite intelligent and are based on the simplicity of regular people who experience a shocking or unexpected event/situation. Certainly an interesting, smart, and moving way to spend your time as a reader.

My hat is off to Pearlman and hope you found this review helpful. I didn't want to give too much away. Certainly...

Reset, Booted and Logged On!
I saw Mz. Wild and her book advertised on Facebook and I checked it out. Quite expensive at $9.99 but I took a chance and I'm glad I did. 'Hardwired' started off a bit slow and in fact I didn't think Blake had that much alpha fire. Boy was I wrong. The story picked up and so did the plot. Engaging, hawt sex and a twisted plot that I am still trying to figure out leaves me forgetting the ridiculous price of $9.99 I paid for the initial book in this series, but yes, I do want more.
I like Erica - she's no push over and she is aware of her issues and she's a go getter.
The story does pick up after the first 35 pages with supporting characters also keeping the story moving. There is also a nice surprise in the fact that 'Hardwired' presents diversity in its story characters - hallelujah!!!
I like how Erica uses her own resources not just relying upon Blake's.
HOW WILL THIS SERIES BE SUCCESSFUL? I pray Mz. Wild doesn't wait too long to drop book 2 and I sincerely hope...

"The one true God has now taken charge of the world, in and through Jesus and his death and resurrection."
NT Wright is an author that many are excited about and many are frustrated by. There is good reason for both. NT Wright is a serious scholar and he has helped reinvigorate serious scholarship about the New Testament that is focused on orthodox Christianity.

The main theological frustration, especially for a particular group of Reformed, is that he has focused on Paul and interpreted Paul as not being primarily focused on Jesus' Penal Substitution. He has not ignored Penal Substitution, or said it is not a real part of Christianity, but he has said the focus of Paul is not on Jesus' penal substitution, but on Jesus as King and restorer.

That major focus on Wright's work is front and center in Simply Good News. Wright does fairly well writing either to an academic audience (as his 1700 pages opus on Paul) or a popular audience. Simply Good News (like Simply Jesus, Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope) is popularly focused and has few footnotes or academic...

Mazes, locked doors, sheep-skinned man.....
A thoughtful, disciplined, lonely boy, a beautiful girl, a bird and a sheep man round out the cast of characters in The Strange Library, a short and strange novel with fewer than 100 pages.

The story begins with an unnamed boy returning his library books and looking for more books before returning home to his waiting mother and his pet bird. At the library he is directed to Room 107, located in the basement of the library, where a gruff old man answers the door and asks him what he wants. Startle by the man, the boy asks for a title that popped into his head on the way from school - "How Taxes are Collected in the Ottoman Empire", but really just anxious to get away from the old man. Unfortunately, he soon finds out that getting out of the library will not be as easy as it was to get in. Be careful what you ask for in this library, and be expected to read the books you ask for -- or else!

Fascinating!
I received this yesterday and picked it up last night, just to look at the first pages until I could properly read it later, and (sigh) after a couple hours of fascinated immersion, I turned the last page. Wonderful. It's an entirely graphic (well, maybe 1% words) exploration of what might have happened on the site of what is, in 2014, a corner in an American home's living room. It's presented in a non-linear / non-chronological narrative from the gassy soup of 3-trillion years ago through extinct animals to a future (no spoilers here) 22,000+ years from now. Numerous cultures are touched upon -- e.g. natives and colonials, but the emphasis is on the 20th-century -- all replete with period clothing, furnishings, language, technology and activities. Little plots develop through short vignettes, but there is much to miss and much to catch on a second (or tenth) reading.

I grew up in a hundred-year-old house and now live in another one -- different town, different state. I...

Good ideas for forming healthy habits
This book is filled with ideas that can help readers find a sense of balance, flow and spontaneity through healthy attitudes and habits. Some of the subjects author Christine Carter addresses include creating satisfying routines that become self-sustaining, finding an optimal balance of what she refers to as strength and ease, getting rid of the compulsion to rush and overschedule oneself, setting sensible limits on use of technology, freeing oneself of clutter and excess, and giving real person to person relationships the attention and energy that they deserve. She discusses lots of related topics along the way: gratitude, giving, forgiving, and many more.

I really appreciate Carter's analysis of habit formation ("Doing without Trying" and "Cracking the Habit Code") and its 3 components: the trigger, the routine, and the reward. Though I had read about these elsewhere, I found Carter's presentation very clear and thorough, and her suggestions easy to implement. I love the...

It's a great peek under the hood (sorry, couldn't resist the pun) at the way an industry operates, and at the gaggle of people, time, and resources it takes to spark innovation. The multiple dynamics at play -- personalities, companies, governments --- working to build a better battery is simply mind boggling and make for a fascinating read.

[Young & Childish] It read more like middle grade than young adult
Upon starting Girl Online, my first impressions were:

1. This author uses way too many exclamation marks.
2. This book feels extremely childish.

I eventually got over that first point. Well, either I “got over” it or the author stopped using so many exclamation marks… But that second point continued throughout the story.

Maybe part of it is my fault. I feel like a lot of the YA books out there feature 16-18 year old main characters, but they always sound so mature. They could pass for more like 18-20. However, in Girl Online, the main character Penny was only 15… and she sounded like it (if not younger). Everything about her just screamed “child”. It felt like a very young young adult book (or old middle grade). Sometimes she acted more like 13 or 14. The four year old often acted more grown up than Penny did.

So maybe this rating is my fault. At 23, I’m not the target audience, but I read it...

A very personal window into the history of PTSD
PTSD has been a hot topic recently, because of its relevance to the military, the survivors of disasters and terrorist attacks, and even potentially the development of personality disorders in childhood. I’ve read a fair amount about it, but have never encountered any material so engaging and personal as “The Evil Hours.”

This book is very thoroughly researched and beautifully written. Morris draws you into the vortex of his own trauma, experienced when he was a reporter in Iraq, and uses it to keep you grounded as he takes you on a journey through the history of “shell shock,” as it was once known. He brings the reader along as he tries various therapies and treatments, interspersing his story with historical anecdotes and the stories of fellow sufferers he meets along the way. Greaney Continues The Legacy
As is expected with a Tom Clancy novel, the strong geopolitics on display mimic a lot of recognizable real-world influences with deft shades of fictionalizing. Here, we see a North Korea that is attempting to extract an estimated 12 trillion dollars worth of rare earth minerals, a huge amount of hard capital that would allow them to buy nuclear weapons, as well as friends with influence in the UN. The ambitions of Choi Ji-Hoon, the young supreme leader of North Korea who has inherited the nation from his recently deceased father, is clearly influenced by real-life ruler of North Korea, Kim Jong-Un, right on down to the actions taken against his uncle. Author Mark Greaney, in true Clancy fashion, is playing in a very recognizable modern world to craft a superb of-the-moment technothriller.

Although I enjoyed Greaney's first solo outing in the Clancy franchise with this past summer's release of Support and Defend, I found the climax of that book to veer off into waters more...

7 Picks for the Summer

Summer is not only upon us, but sitting on most of our faces at this moment. Wouldn't it be nice to put something else a bit closer to your face? Well how about some good books? What a novel idea!

Below are my Summer picks, which also amount to what are some of my favorite reads of the year thus far. I left off novels from series in progress as I like to think of this as a list I'd rattle off to a friend I haven't seen in a long time who might not be down the genre hole as deeply as I. These are in no particular order.

The Age of Ice by J. M. Sidorova

This one is definitely the most challenging read of the bunch, but it is worth it. If you're feeling the heat then the cure is surely The Age of Ice with a protagonist who has not only a cold disposition, but whose icy skin leaves him at arms length from everyone in his life. Placed during the late 1700s in Czarist Russia it is both a wonderful historical look at the period as well as a beautifully told story about feeling out of place wherever you are.

Love Minus Eighty by Will McIntosh

This is exactly what I want my Sci-Fi to be. The story centers on a future in which good looking women who die are kept cryogenically frozen and can be reanimated if someone is willing to pay the exorbitant costs involved. In less capable hands this could have easily turned comic, but McIntosh has infused his characters with such believable depth you can't help care for them. The future McIntosh envisions is telling about the direction of our own hyper connected society and the direction that we're headed towards.

The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

As the title intimates a Jewish golem and a genie out of Arabian lore both end up in New York City in search of a place they fit in. One is as blank slate driven by simple desires while the other is already hundreds of years old, but far out of their own time. The New York City of the early 1900s is not only beautifully explored but so are the communities of Syrian and Jewish these character inhabit. It's a fantastical love story that had me from its opening pages.

Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan

Guns and magic have finally hit their stride with McClellan's opening salvo in the Powder Mage Trilogy which we enter in the middle of a coup d'état with the King and his mages of old being silenced to usher in the age of the Powder Mages. My only real complaint is that there are very few women of substance in the telling. Hopefully this will be fixed in the subsequent volumes. Still McClellan's got me hooked and I need my next fix. Someone pass the snuff box.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

Yes, it is on everyone's list, but it deserves it for more than the author's name on the cover. A month removed and my mind still wanders back. The tone is highly personable which makes it feel like your own tale of childhood as you fight against an ancient evil mistakenly released.

Lexicon by Max Barry

Words of power are not necessarily a new idea, but Barry breathes life and high action into them with his secret society of Poets who have access to a lexicon that will have you doing back flips if they so desired. Simply a page flipping good yarn that hits far more often than it misses with a tight plot and humor in all the right places.

The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

This is one falls into the "fun" category and lives up to the publisher tagline, which basically boils down to a European Forrest Gump. If you like road trip stories than consider this a world trip movie as the old man in question Allan Karlsson lives a rich full life and likes to blow things up. But this isn't just the story of an old man jumping out the window, but flips back and forth to the life of a young Allan who meets some of the most influential people of the last 100 years.

One thing is clear from this list: I have a thing for Historical fiction this year. So what have you really enjoyed this summer?

Kindle Version or Hardcover?
I can't add much to the excellent reviews posted so far. However, I've heard people say that this book really should be bought in hardback for the illustrations and other typography. I don't think this is necessary. I'm reading it through the Kindle app on an iPad, and it looks great. The only glitch I've noticed is when the German text of a poem is longer than one page. In that case the app renders it as page 1, German text; 2, English translation; 3. continuation of German text; continuation of English translation. In a "real" book the pages would run German, continuation; English, continuation. Is this worth the significant price differential? For me, emphatically yes. The illustrations are rendered in full color in the app and look good.

Bostridge's analysis of all of the songs is fascinating, none more so than the one about the charcoal-burner's hut (Rast). This, and others, will make you think twice and more about a cycle you think you know well.

Best Offer for Basic Economics

Like it or not, the American voter is even more stupid than Mr. Gruber imagines.
Thomas Sowell (who also authored "The Vision of the Anointed") has the strongest scientific and logical acumen and the clearest communication skill of anyone since Milton Friedman. "Basic Economics" could be a users' guide to the prevarication and chicanery which politicians and their whole parties use to pervert the dismal science to make it support their unashamedly opportunistic application of language for their own self-enrichment. When it comes to real "greed" corporations are pikers compared to greedy political misanthropes in their quest for the holy vote.

The liberal religious shibboleth "rent control," is exposed for the evil that it is. Sowell cites three not-wealthy New Yorkers who pay $1200 each to sleep on the floors of a newly-built, current-rate, rent-controlled, three room apartment of 600 square feet near Washington Square. East and uptown, a financier and his family of three enjoy a 3000 square foot apartment for $300 a...

Good Medicine!

Been a long time since I had a laughing fit. This time it was triggered by the one that has the farmer walking from the chicken coop to the house with a basket of eggs, passing a hen going the other way, carrying the farmer's baby. It all makes sense somehow...

The photo seems to indicate the books are small like normal paperback books, but the volumes are BIG (about 8" x 12" x 1" thick) and heavy. Printing is beautiful on thick-stock quality coated paper. Some comics are just a tad small compared to original, so a little extra light may be required for older readers.

If you're a Far Side fan, and you've given or lent your individual books, this complete set is awesome to get and awesome to give as a gift.

Probably the best LR book in the Universe. (subject to certain alien life assumptions :) )

Difficult to say something that hasn't already been said, this is an amazing book and quite easily the best Lightroom book I have come across (and I have a few!). The style and format of the book make it both very easy to follow and even easier to dip into at specific points when questions arise. It is well worth connecting with Tony and Chelsea via their facebook group as they are always willing to help anyone (including me :) ). Of course, you need to be putting your best work into Lightroom, and this is where their other book, 'Stunning Digital Photography' comes in, another well written book. Both come with loads of videos and they also run a YouTube channel worth subscribing to. To be honest you are really missing out if you don't get this book, particularly at this price. With all the options mentioned above you should not miss the opportunity to become part of a fantastic community.

The Train to Crystal City: A Journey's End
I just recently got the opportunity to preview a upcoming release, "The Train to Crystal City" by Jan Jarboe Russell. This is the untold story of not just Japanese-Americans held in US concentration camps during WWII, but the largely unknown story of German-Americans and Italian-Americans as well, many of whom had lived in the US for years but were stripped of the US citizenship and imprisoned. In addition, this story reveals how the American born spouses and their children were also incarcerated as well. That would be story enough, but there's more.
"The Train to Crystal City" also details a secret prisoner exchange designed and approved by FDR whereby these now former Americans were sent to enemy combatant countries along with their spouses and children, often against their will in exchange for key individuals being held behind enemy lines, including downed airmen and US businessmen. The story details how the US military kidnapped foreign...

Highly enjoyable sequel for fans of YA and Mermaids.
This review originally appeared on www.readplayreview.com

Reviewed last year, Deep Blue (Waterfire Saga #1) was a fast paced and highly enjoyable read about the undersea adventures of a group of young mermaids.

Deep Blue was good, but it turns out I enjoyed the sequel, Rogue Wave, even more.

What’d I think?

Last year I really liked Deep Blue, giving it four stars even though some of the dialogue choices were a bit out of place (I distinctly remember someone using the term FOMO). The world was well constructed, the magic system of songspells was beautifully crafted and the main characters were varied and interesting.

It seems Jennifer Donnelly took notice of the dialogue issue while writing the follow up, Rogue Wave. It flows more naturally and is a far better book because of it. Plus with all of the world building out of the way in the first book, we are dropped straight into the exciting parts of the plot.

asking you to reflect on who you are and who you'd like to become
What is leadership? What is management? Why do many people mix these terms up? Why are so many so-called leaders or managers stuck in a time warp? The answers to these questions and more besides are woven together in this compact book.

Despite the book covering a lot of interesting topics, it is a bit of a slow burner and it is unclear whether today’s busy executive – those who need this the most – will have the time or inclination to fight their way through it. That would be a shame. Publicity material for the book notes that so many remain stuck in outdated mind-sets and modes of operating, even after others recognize the need for change. Modern-day leaders need to learn to pivot even when there are no obvious signals guiding their way and this book modestly suggest that it can help!

Certainly old views such as deeply reflecting on one’s strengths and weaknesses are thrown to the wayside, as the author notes: “Most traditional...

Great Moral Case Studies, but Scientific Morality--Not So Much
I had a bit of a hard time reading parts of "The Moral Arc."

I chose it right away when it showed up as an Amazon Vine selection. As an unabashed secular humanist, I was interested to learn about author Michael Shermer's thesis that the scientific way of thinking has made people, and society as a whole, more moral.

Well, I'd like to believe that. You'd never find a more ardent proponent of the scientific method than me. My skepticism runs broad and deep. My watchwords are, "Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear." I'd be a good Fair Witness (you'll know what I mean if you're familiar with the late Robert A. Heinlein's work). I think all religions, rather than being forces for moral good as their practitioners would like us to believe, have the opposite effect, and are primarily responsible, now and throughout history, for most of the misery and suffering that have plagued the human race since time immemorial.

So, having said that, I...

Sweet picture book - perfect for sharing
When this picture book arrived at my house I just happened to be babysitting for my 14 month old granddaughter. So we opened the package and sat down to read it together. In this case I will count her opinion as worth more than mine. She loved The Biggest Kiss!

14 month olds are not known for sitting still so I was amazed that she sat on my lap for the entire book. Granted the text isn't lengthy, but I think it's a record for my granddaughter anyway.

I have a number of books for my granddaughter on my ipod touch (encased in the Fisher Price apptivity case. Definitely worth it!) Those books come in handy when we're stuck waiting somewhere or are at a restaurant. Her reaction to this picture book was quite different than to ebooks or even the average board book.

First of all this was much bigger than the screen on my ipod or even a board book. Second, the paper is lovely - heavy with just a little bit of texture. It's a great medium for Judi Abbot's...

I have read so so many books on overcoming life's big problems. this is the most practical guide i have ever read. Thank you TNH!!

GUEST POST | Ken Scholes on Libraries and Memory, Knowledge and Power

Ken Scholes on Libraries and Memory, Knowledge and Power

Art  by Marc Simonetti

I’ve always loved libraries…and librarians.

It started in my elementary school, even before I fell in love with reading. A room full of books – many of which had pictures! At first, it was just the picture books that drew me in but once I started reading, I just couldn’t stop. When I learned that there was an even bigger library than the one in my school, I was elated. I checked out as many books as I was allowed and churned through sometimes one or two books a day, and even more in the summer.

So around the time the time the writing bug bit me, I decided that a real writer should probably work in a library, surrounded by books. At the age of fourteen, I started showing up at the Enumclaw Public Library, filling out applications regularly even though the librarian told me (in a very friendly but quiet voice) that I had to be sixteen to work for the library. Still, I was back every so often to try again. For two years.

Persistence paid off and when I turned sixteen, I started working as a library page, shelving returned books and doing whatever odd jobs needed doing. It was Heaven. No fines for late books and at the front of the line for anything new and exciting to come in. And pick of the litter when it came to books being disposed of. I still have some ancient volumes of Shakespeare in my personal library from that time.

Yes, I’ve always loved libraries.

Which is why, on the first page of the first chapter of my first novel, I blew one up.

And somehow, despite this, the American Library Association put that first novel, Lamentation, on the RUSA Reading List for Best Fantasy.

Maybe it’s because of how seriously my protagonists took this devastating act of terror and the hole its destruction left in their world. Or maybe because re-building the library became an important aspect of the story. No matter the reasons, I’ve had a lot of support for the series from libraries and librarians and I’m glad for it.

When I conceived the notion of the Great Androfrancine Library, it was initially just the background for a short story. It wasn’t until I started stitching together the two stories that became the beginning and middle of Lamentation that I saw clearly the re-building of the library – or the notion of a hidden replica of the library. I was drawing a bit from the murky soup of history – the destruction of the Library of Alexandria in Egypt, which is not quite as easy to pin down as legends would have us believe. That library appears to have gone through a series of events that eventually led, over time, to its loss. In reality, no one seems certain exactly what happened and when though speculation points widely to various events between approximately 50 BCE and 650 AD.

But in my world, I wanted it gone quickly, along with its Androfrancine keepers, and I wanted to explore how that kind of loss would play out while my characters sought to solve the puzzle of who destroyed Windwir and why. The “light” of human knowledge and accomplishment, dug painstakingly from the ruins of the Old World and stored away for safekeeping, suddenly snuffed out, and the glue that held a carefully monitored society of survivors suddenly burned away.

And there’s a deeper exploration there:  What happens when one group of people controls the flow of knowledge and what happens when another group takes away that knowledge?  Because knowledge is power but it is also memory.  And if you control or eliminate that memory, the river of history flows in favor of whichever group holds that power to impose their own recollection of how things are and should be.

As we progress deeper into the Psalms of Isaak, we see that it’s about much more than a destroyed library – it is about a sudden and unexpected war of cultures with blurry lines of motivation and intent on both sides.  And moreso, it is about how people react to those sudden, violent changes.

So like I said, I love libraries.  And librarians.  I think the world is a darker, colder place without what they do for us.  So I’ll try to go easier on them in my next series.

*******

I had only found out about Robert M. Drake by stumbling upon his Instagram page (rmdrk), what a happy accident. Then, I had found out he had written books, so I decided I needed to get my hands on at least one of them.

This book in particular is a hauntingly beautiful collection of poems and thoughts. It draws you into his mentality and makes you never want to leave. He writes of love and life so passionately, as if the emotion and experience are sacred things to be treasured at all times.

It is quite short, so I finished in one sitting, but it left a huge impression. They way he strings words together are just so breathtaking. At this point, I’m just about willing to read anything he writes. By the end, if I had to choose one word to describe this gorgeousness of a book it would be “pretty.” It is just so pretty. - Bianca B.
