Great series for those who have outgrown The Magic Tree House

Summary (125 pages): Ranger just can’t stop chasing squirrels, and his distractibility has disqualified him to be a reliable rescue dog. One day digs up an old box which transports him back in time, and he ends up joining a wagon caravan traveling on the Oregon trail. Along the way, his new family deals with a buffalo stampede, disease, and a near-fatal river crossing. Ranger is able to use his training and natural instincts to help them through it all. But Ranger can’t forget his old owner Luke, and at the end he finds a way to get home again.

Pros: This is a great book to move to from The Magic Tree House. Ranger is lovable, the adventures are exciting, and the reading level is just right for those who have outgrown early chapter books. Happily, this is book one in a new series, with Ranger traveling to Ancient Rome in the next entry.

Cons: The author’s note was interesting, but probably overlong for most kid readers.
