I just finished reading Listen,Slowly and have tried for the last ten minutes to put into words how much I am impressed with this novel. Listen, Slowly, is so much more than a story of a California teen forced to accompany her grandmother to Vietnam in hopes of finding out her grandfather's fate. Lai's writing touches all the senses so that the reader sees, hears, smells and feels the bustling, crowded city of Hanoi and the hot buggy villages on its outskirts. "My skin turns sticky and oily, like old ketchuped fries."
Lai also does an excellent job of capturing the attitude of teenage Mia, complete with slang, body language and attitude. She draws an equally complete picture of Mia's grandmother, proper, mild and never-Americanized. When a detective in Vietnam claims to have found out something about Mia's grandfather, everyone is surprised by the strength of her grandmother's resolve to discover what happened to her husband after they were separated at the time of Saigon's...
