Just Couldn't Do It
While many reviews have praised this book for its vision and the author's skill at storytelling--and as a major fan of the genre best described as "post-apocalyptic survivalism"--I was unable to continue after the third chapter. The drudgery of translating the characters' decrepit English patois into flowing, understandable language simply became too great. Though other reviewers seem almost rhapsodic over what they consider a unique and audacious take on a future "evolved" (or "devolved") English, I get enough exposure to poor spoken and written English every day in real life, living in the southern U.S. I actually found it easier reading a story written in German and translating on the fly--and my ability with German is at best mediocre--than I did trying to slog through the corrupted English of the characters in this novel. The experience was immediately tedious and aggravating--exactly the opposite of what I look for in recreational reading.
