This story definitely held my interest
Greer Macallister’s novel “The Magician’s Lie” is a “story-within-a-story” narrative told in two very different styles and “voices”. Of the two main characters, Ada, aka Vivi or Arden, is the narrator of her own story, which is told in first-person, past tense. Holt, a small-town police officer, is described in third-person, present tense. The setting, as presented at the beginning, is that “The Amazing Arden”, a female magician whose show is playing in a small Iowa town, is “accidentally” captured by Holt after it seems she has killed her husband/partner in a grizzly ax murder, perhaps as part of an illusion-gone-wrong.
